Nine small radiation shields made to adhere to the case of mobile phones were tested at 914 and 1880 MHz. Five popular products were tested because advertisements typically claim they are up to 99% effective in blocking radio frequency (RF) radiation emitted from mobile phones. Also, four other conceptually unusual products were tested because advertisements typically claim they emit oscillations that counteract the RF radiation from mobile phones. Each shield was tested on the same mobile phone, and measurements were made to compare the absorption of RF energy in the head with and without each shield attached to the phone. The phone was positioned against a head model, and an automated measurement process was used to determine specific absorption rate (SAR) in the same way it is used at Motorola to test the compliance of mobile phones with respect to human exposure limits. The location of the peak SAR was not observed to change with any of the shields attached to the phone, and the 1 g, peak spatial average SAR did not change by any statistically significant amount. These results indicate the small shields are ineffective in reducing the exposure of the head to RF energy emitted by a mobile phone.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The considerable increase in biodiesel production worldwide in the last 5 years resulted in astoichiometric increased coproduction of crude glycerol. As an excess of crude glycerol hasbeen produced, its value on market was reduced and it is becoming a "waste-stream" insteadof a valuable "coproduct". The development of biorefineries, i.e. production of chemicals andpower integrated with conversion processes of biomass into biofuels, has been singled out asa way to achieve economically viable production chains, valorize residues and coproducts,and reduce industrial waste disposal. In this sense, several alternatives aimed at the use ofcrude glycerol to produce fuels and chemicals by microbial fermentation have beenevaluated. This review summarizes different strategies employed to produce biofuels andchemicals (1,3-propanediol, 2,3-butanediol, ethanol, n-butanol, organic acids, polyols andothers) by microbial fermentation of glycerol. Initially, the industrial use of each chemical isbriefly presented; then we systematically summarize and discuss the different strategies toproduce each chemical, including selection and genetic engineering of producers, andoptimization of process conditions to improve yield and productivity. Finally, the impact ofthe developments obtained until now are placed in perspective and opportunities andchallenges for using crude glycerol to the development of biodiesel-based biorefineries areconsidered. In conclusion, the microbial fermentation of glycerol represents a remarkablealternative to add value to the biodiesel production chain helping the development ofbiorefineries, which will allow this biofuel to be more competitive.  相似文献

In a previous study, our group verified that 100% of mice survived to a lethal dose of Candida albicans following pretreatment with concanavalin-A (Con-A) for 3 days. This work proposed to investigate whether treatment could mediate an adaptative immune response involving T(H) 17 cells. A significant increase in IL-17 levels at 6 h postinfection was observed and was maintained up to 18 h in the Con-A group, whereas in control mice, a reduction in this cytokine was verified. In addition, T(H) 17 cells develop in the presence of TGF-β, IL-1 β, and IL-6 that were increased significantly 2 h postinfection in Con-A-treated mice. Macrophages were involved in the process, engulfing greater numbers of yeast cells, and were activated through TNF-α and interferon-γ produced at significant levels at 2 h postinfection. A significant increase in IL-12 levels was also observed at 2 h postinfection. Thus, activated macrophages were probably more capable of killing and processing Candida antigens, signalizing an adaptative immune response. Macrophages from controls did not prevent yeast-to-hyphae transition and were partially destroyed, as shown in scanning microscopy. These results suggest that treatment with Con-A facilitated the triggering of T(H) 17 and T(H) 1 responses via IL-17 and IFN-γ production, leading to the resolution of C. albicans infection.  相似文献

The bioassay-guided fractionation of the ethyl acetate extract of the fungus Cochliobolus sp. highlighted leishmanicidal activity and allowed for anhydrocochlioquinone A (ANDC-A) isolation. MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectra of this compound were in agreement with those published in the literature. ANDC-A exhibited leishmanicidal activity with EC50 value of 22.4 µg/mL (44 μM) and, when submitted to the microdilution assay against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, showed a minimal inhibitory concentration against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25295 of 128 μg/mL (248.7 μM). It was also active against five human cancer cell lines, showing IC50 values from 5.4 to 20.3 μM. ANDC-A demonstrated a differential selectivity for HL-60 (SI 5.5) and THP-1 (SI 4.3) cell lines in comparison with Vero cells and was more selective than cisplatin and doxorubicin against MCF-7 cell line in comparison with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. ANDC-A was able to eradicate clonogenic tumour cells at concentrations of 20 and 50 μM and induced apoptosis in all tumour cell lines at 20 μM. These results suggest that ANDC-A might be used as a biochemical tool in the study of tumour cells biochemistry as well as an anticancer agent with durable effects on tumours.  相似文献

Bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas spp. is an important tomato and pepper disease worldwide. Recent outbreaks of bacterial spot disease in Central Brazil and Canada have been attributed to Xanthomonas gardneri, which is also recognized as group D of Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria. Carotenoid-like pigments called xanthomonadins, which are diagnostic for yellow Xanthomonas spp., were extracted from X. gardneri. It was shown that the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, member of the Brassicaceae family, can develop disease symptoms in response to different isolates of X. gardneri. Secretion of enzymes has been shown to play an important role in pathogenicity for different pathogens, and to begin to understand the interaction of X. gardneri and A. thaliana, a biochemical analysis of secreted proteins in the presence of A. thaliana leaves was performed. Different enzymatic activities such as for cellulase, α-arabinofuranosidase, pectinase, invertase and xylanase were assayed. In the presence of leaves, cellulase activity was highest after 60 and 72 h of growth and α-arabinofuranosidase activity was detected between 12 and 72 h of growth. Pectinase, invertase and xylanase activities were not detected. Cellulase and α-arabinofuranosidase activities may be important for X. gardneri acquisition of plant nutrients through degradation of cellulose fibers and hemicellulose of the cell wall, respectively, to the invasion of the host tissue and/or may generate signal molecules that are recognized by the plant. This is the first study to address how X. gardneri responds to host plant tissue.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to describe the histological events that led to somatic embryogenesis in macaw palm (Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd. ex Martius). Zygotic embryos were inoculated on Y3 medium containing 9 μM 4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolonic acid (picloram). Somatic embryos regenerated from nodular callus on induction medium with activated charcoal under photoperiod or without activated charcoal under dark. Many proembryos originated from the fundamental meristem after 10–20 days of culture. When transferred to medium containing activated charcoal, under photoperiod, calli regenerated into somatic embryos of unicellular origin. These embryos had protoderm, plumule and procambial strands and some of them could germinate. After 30–40 days of culture, meristematic masses grew from procambial cells. The masses generated nodular callus, and after transfer to medium without activated charcoal, under dark, they generated somatic embryos of multicellular origin. Those embryos did not regenerate into plants.  相似文献

The analysis of plant proteomes has drastically expanded in the last few years. Mass spectrometry technology, stains, software and progress in bioinformatics have made identification of proteins relatively easy. The assignment of proteins to particular organelles and the development of better algorithms to predict sub-cellular localization are examples of how proteomic studies are contributing to plant biology. Protein phosphorylation and degradation are also known to occur during plant defense signaling cascades. Despite the great potential to give contributions to the study of plant-pathogen interactions, only recently has the proteomic approach begun to be applied to this field. Biological variation and complexity in a situation involving two organisms in intimate contact are intrinsic challenges in this area, however, for proteomics studies yet, there is no substitute for in planta studies with pathogens, and ways to address these problems are discussed. Protein identification depends not only on mass spectrometry, but also on the existence of complete genome sequence databases for comparison. Although the number of completely sequenced genomes is constantly growing, only four plants have their genomes completely sequenced. Additionally, there are already a number of pathosystems where both partners in the interaction have genomes fully sequenced and where functional genomics tools are available. It is thus to be expected that great progress in understanding the biology of these pathosystems will be made over the next few years. Cheaper sequencing technologies should make protein identification in non-model species easier and the bottleneck in proteomic research should shift from unambiguous protein identification to determination of protein function.  相似文献

Lanthanides ion complexes have been intensively investigated as light emitting materials due to their interesting photophysical properties, such as narrow line luminescence with a long lifetime, large Stokes shift and high luminescence quantum efficiency. Here we report the synthesis, structural and photophysical properties of a new Tb(III) complex. This complex showed strong photoemission of green light both in solution and in the solid state as well as the characteristic emission lines of the Tb(III) ion. The electroluminescence properties of the complex were also studied and we obtained bright green light emission through the use of a co-deposited structure. The fabricated device showed a typical diode behavior with a low threshold bias voltage (around 10 V).  相似文献
